The Power Of Words

Most people don't realize the true power of words and how they can affect us and the lives of others, for better or for worse.

For instance, say I write a song about overcoming adversity. Some of the people who listen to that song may find in it some inner strength to overcome their own problems and obstacles.

Words can also be damaging and hurtful to others. For example, a father tells his children that they are “losers” after a while those children may start to believe that they are indeed losers. They may begin to have troubles in life and act the way they perceive themselves to be, such as behavioral problems, poor grades and not follow through with their dreams or goals.

‘We are masters of the unsaid words, but slaves of those we let slip out.’ ~ Winston Churchill

Iam also guilty of slinging negative arrows at times. We all need to think before we speak and aim to understand that if we just try and find something positive to say, instead of focusing on the negative, we’ll get a better outcome. Even if the other person said or did something hurtful to us. I know it’s a lot easier said than done, but it works.

So the next time that you are being verbally attacked and you are ready to lash back; Defuse the confrontation with a positive statement like: I’m sorry that you feel that way, I think that you are a very good person “or” I understand why you would feel that way, I didn’t mean to upset you.”

Trust me,more times than not the other person’s attitude is going to change if you respond in a positive way. It doesn’t always work, but at least you will know in your own heart that you made a positive effort to make things better.
